The Turkey Flat Vineyard boasts some of the oldest Shiraz vines in the world. Planted in 1847, these hard-working gnarled old vines are still producing fantastic grapes. They are dry grown with their roots extending metres into the soil in search of moisture.
Much of the credit for the best Shiraz made in the Barossa is due to old vines such as these. The fact that these vines still exist is largely due to a far-sighted quarantine scheme, in which South Australia was spared the phylloxera outbreak which devastated the vineyards of Europe, America and subsequently parts of Australia in the late 1800’s.
This shiraz is a result of a very intricate blending process. After each parcel of fruit is individually vinified & aged in specially selected French oak barrels, the final blend is created with careful consideration to upholding its reputation for cellaring gracefully, retaining its freshness and balance for many years.

The 2012 vintage was ideal for growing Shiraz in the Barossa Valley. A wet previous summer and winter gave high sub-soil moisture levels. This combined with a long and mild summer allowed each block to ripen independently and express their individual characters. The resultant blending process has created a wine of unsurpassed quality with a combination of structure, elegance and aromatics than can only be achieved in great vintages.
The wine is a beacon for the Turkey Flat style. It has a deep colour and bright aromatics. The palate is unctuous and full of fruit whilst being supported by long tannins. The oak is delicately interwoven through the palate lifting and extending the natural elements of the wine. Cellar 15 years plus.

A very compelling nose that marries earthy, savoury characters with ripe dark-berry fruits, meat and spices. The palate has a savoury twist, plenty of summer berry fruits and a juicy, bright finish. Needs a couple of years to settle in. Drink in 2016.

A very good vintage results in a striking individual statement of Barossa shiraz. Vibrant and floral notes on the nose. Lovely meaty black cherry and earthy rose petal characters. Palate is seamless, with fine grained tannins and oak working harmoniously. Very long in the mouth. Such concentration and style, with a silkiness throughout. The best yet.

This is the best Turkey Flat shiraz of their 25 vintages to date. The colour is deep red-purple and the bouquet reveals plum and raspberry, dark cherry and spice aromas in a fruit-driven, subtly oaken style. A full-bodied red of purity, poise and harmony. Long-term potential. Best 2018-2042. 14.5 per cent alcohol.

Deepish red/purple colour. Pepper, spice, earth and herbal aromas, the palate full-bodied and smooth, with ample tannin and flavour, with some green peppercorn notes. However, the palate richness, ripe fruit sweetness and flesh belie any greener spectrum flavours and aromas. A big, generous, ripe, and almost opulent style. Very good shiraz indeed.

Deep colour; the backbone of this wine comes from the vines planted in 1847 on the Bethany Road Vineyard, some of the oldest Shiraz vines in the world; French oak was used at the end of the fermentation and subsequent maturation; everything it should be from '12, with layers of black fruits, liquorice, tannins and cedar oak. Seriously underpriced. 14.5% alc.

Turkey Flat has slowly, slowly become a more sophisticated wine over the years. It’s the same same, but different. This release has it where it’s been wanting to be.
It’s not impenetrable, it’s not monolithic, it’s not simple or necessarily easy to categorise. For a Barossa shiraz in 2014, these are all positives. It’s ripe and licoricey but it has nutty, herbal notes too and quite a deal of them. Smoky oak plays a role, but it’s easy to miss. It’s clean, juicy and well-fruited, but it has a sinewy aspect. It’s medium-bodied with fine-grained, fruit-filled tannin. It benefits from being given time to breathe in the glass. In all, it’s a top Turkey Flat release.
