The Turkey Flat Vineyard boasts some of the oldest Shiraz vines in the world. Planted in 1847, these hard-working gnarled old vines are still producing fantastic grapes. They are dry grown with their roots extending metres into the soil in search of moisture.
Much of the credit for the best Shiraz made in the Barossa is due to old vines such as these. The fact that these vines still exist is largely due to a far-sighted quarantine scheme, in which South Australia was spared the phylloxera outbreak which devastated the vineyards of Europe, America and subsequently parts of Australia in the late 1800’s.
This shiraz is a result of a very intricate blending process. After each parcel of fruit is individually vinified & aged in specially selected French oak barrels, the final blend is created with careful consideration to upholding its reputation for cellaring gracefully, retaining its freshness and balance for many years.

Consecutive wet winters, a warm growing season and modest yields have created a 2010 Shiraz of rare quality.
Musing with intensity, the nose broods of dark berries and cedar. Carefully chosen French oak lifts the fruit, lengthens the palate and adds longevity to the wine. In youth, this wine is firmly bound and requires decanting. Given time in the decanter, or alternatively the cellar, this wine will unravel to reveal a combination of decadence and balance that only exists in exceptional vintages. Cellar fifteen years plus.

Lovely primary fruits with a savoury, spicy scent, and a herbal edge which could be from the oak. Beautiful dark-berry fruit concentration that’s in no way thick or heavy; opulent but elegant and savoury – seamless balance and finesse. 93/100

Partly grown on an 1847 block of shiraz. That’s old. Exactly how much of the wine is grown on the old portion of the vineyard is not known. Super shiraz release from Turkey Flat. I’m sold on this one. Terrific spread of tannin, ample chocolatey fruit flavour, a real sense of volume and yet well controlled throughout. Gets better as it breathes; the tannin becomes more assertive, in a good way. Blackberries, earth, aniseed, ground spice and tar. At the outer limits ripeness-wise – which means it won’t be for everyone – but for me, it pulls it off.

Turkey Flat Shiraz 2010, $43-$46 Score 95/100 Value Good Barossa shiraz need not be a blockbuster to have richness and personality. Turkey Flat 2010 has elegant balance and finesse without losing impact. A mellow nose of spiced dark plums, crushed blackberries, pepper and sweet oak introduces a seamless, smooth palate of lovely concentration and understated power. It is layered in the mouth and quite profound, with fine-grained tannins supporting everything perfectly. (Screw cap; 14.5 per cent alcohol.) Ageing? Yes, two to 15 years. Christie and Peter Schulz say their magnificent 2010 shiraz is based on vines planted at Bethany in 1847 by Johann Fielder. They complement fruit from those venerable old plants with material from low-yielding vines at Stonewell and Koonunga. This is perhaps the best shiraz since the Schulzes made the transition from grape growing to winemaking about 20 years ago. It's big, and shows the lush and tender tannins of the Barossa Valley. But it's so perfectly balance, and the French oak so complementary to the fruit flavour and tannin that it sits lightly on the palate. The Schultz family have owned the Turkey Flat vineyard (planted 1847) since 1870 but have much more recently (1990) developed the winery and labe and expanded the vineyards. This family business is best e known for its rosé, grenache and shiraz. A portion (about 10%) of their shiraz is from the 160-year-old Turkey Flat vineyard. Unlike a great deal of Barossa shiraz, it is fermented and matured in old and new French oak. The 2010 Turkey Flat Shiraz is a monumental red with marvellous aromas. Strong crimson-purple; one of the best Turkey Flat shirazs to date; the palate is exceedingly complex, and very intense, yet ends with a burst of red and black fruits to accompany all that has gone before. It could be mistaken for a wine from a cooler climate, such is its length and balance. Rating 97/100
