Large bottle turkey flat shiraz bottle

The Turkey Flat Vineyard boasts some of the oldest Shiraz vines in the world. Planted in 1847, these hard-working gnarled old vines are still producing fantastic grapes. They are dry grown with their roots extending metres into the soil in search of moisture.

Much of the credit for the best Shiraz made in the Barossa is due to old vines such as these. The fact that these vines still exist is largely due to a far-sighted quarantine scheme, in which South Australia was spared the phylloxera outbreak which devastated the vineyards of Europe, America and subsequently parts of Australia in the late 1800’s.

This shiraz is a result of a very intricate blending process. After each parcel of fruit is individually vinified & aged in specially selected French oak barrels, the final blend is created with careful consideration to upholding its reputation for cellaring gracefully, retaining its freshness and balance for many years.

The Turkey Flat Shiraz is a proud holder of a Barossa Trust Mark. The Barossa Trust Mark is a mark of aspirational standard set by the Barossa region. It provides you with a guarantee and assurance of quality.

It is founded on five value pillars:

Origin - our sense of place

Integrity - our sense of purpose

Quality - our sense of ambition

Environment - our sense of responsibility

Community - our sense of belonging

1996 Vintage Tasting notes

With every vintage this wine seems to gain weight and flavour concentration. The 1996 vintage was an exceptional one in the Barossa. Bursting with intense Shiraz fruit flavours enhanced by 2 years maturation in a combination of French and American oak hogsheads. Rich and full bodied with masses of sweet berry fruit, dark cherries, plums and chocolate. The palate, while intense and powerful, is smooth and long, with lingering tannins.

AS with previous vintages of Turkey Flat Shiraz this wine will improve with age. So cellar it alongside your other Turkey Flat wines and enjoy its unfolding pleasures over the next 20 years.

Reviews for the 1996 Shiraz - 'Pure Barossa'

WINE SPECTATOR – Jan 31, 2000

This wine is pure Barossa, dripping with fruit and spice, long as a mile and eminently ageable. The 1996 weaves notes of earth and spice through the blueberry and anise flavours that swirl through the firm frame. The 1997, which rates 91 points, frames its licorice-scented plum, blueberry and black cherry flavours with a sense of restraint on the long finish. Rating: 93 Points

WINE SPECTATOR– March 31, 1999

A sturdy wine, with a distinctive character that lasts and lasts on the focused finish, this Shiraz from Oz weaves notes of earth and spice through the blueberry and anise flavours that swirl through the firm frame. Drink now through 2005. 2.000 cases made. Rating: 93 points
