This is fun to drink and great to see Turkey Flat showing a young, fresh red from the variety and their vine sources. Mataro can be so joyous yet serious at the same time.
Pretty perfume of Cherry Ripe chocolate bars, lavender, rose petal, faint earth. Palate is medium bodied, even on the lean side, but fine tuned with a mesh of suede tannins and drawn long with its mulberry, pomengranate flavours. Lick of fennel for interest in the palate too. Silkiness up front, the chew starts mid palate and finishes the wine. Quite tannic and structured actually, which is great. If this was at hand, with some hearty meaty/roasted vegetables, it would absolutely sing too.

Encounters with unblended Australian Mataro (also known as Mourvèdre) are rare. The origins of Mataro are almost certainly Spanish where it is often called Monastrell. It is the principal black grape of the five appellations that cluster on Spain's South-eastern Mediterranean Coast.
A very late variety in both bud break and ripening season, the Barossa Valley is one of the few areas in Australia that can successfully ripen Mataro. One of the original grapes grown in the Barossa Valley, Mataro thrives in the hot and dry conditions of a Barossa summer.
The wine produced from Mataro’s small, sweet, thick-skinned berries tend to be deeply coloured, rich in spice, high in alcohol and tannin, gamey when young and full of fruit.
Ripeness levels are critical to producing Mataro with this rich level of fruit & spice. Careful selection of French oak enhances the fruit characters and structure of this wine.
Enjoy with: Honest foods of the earth; slow-roast lamb, game with wild mushrooms & thyme or roasted 5-spice duck.
A fresh and exciting representation of Mataro. The opening bouquet is full of blueberries and jubes. Gently savoury though classy. A playful and seamless wine that coats the palate in joy. Subtle oak integration over a brief eight months adds fine tannins to the finish.

"Crushed/destemmed, wild yeast open-fermented, 14 days on skins, matured in Italian-coopered French oak (50% new) for 9 months. Bright, clear crimson; from Turkey Flat's aged, dry grown vines, the fruit and tannins well able to stand up to the French oak. It's deceptively light-bodied, its length and persistence likewise. While it can be drunk now. 5+ years will see it bloom.

"The colour is deep red-purple and there are smoky, herbal and charred wood aromas with a twist of black pepper. The palate is very firm and tannic with savoury, sooty, earthy, smoke and pepper notes. A boots-and-all wine; dense, powerful and slightly raw in its youth.
