Turkey Flat has more than 25 years experience in making Grenache. This older variety for South Australia has a natural home in the Barossa, although respect for the variety as a maker of fine wine has only recently been achieved. It has been an important part of the Turkey Flat range since 1992.
Mark Bulman has made Grenache his signature varietal after taking over full control of winemaking at Turkey Flat in 2010. Under his direction this remains respectful to our past tradition of making Grenache into a fine wine, while moving seamlessly into a more refined, contemporary style.
An intriguing nose of violets and crushed roses draws you into the wines dark and serious core. The palate is a powerhouse of lively red fruit, cherry, spice and balsamic strawberry - seductively structured by progressive tannins, plush mouthfeel and delightful use of oak. Arguably one of the finest examples to be made at Turkey Flat, a beacon for the variety leaving no stone unturned.
The wine was fermented with 10% whole bunch with half the remaining stems also included in the ferment. Maturation took place in a combination of neutral oak Foudre and 20% second-use Burgundian barrels for 12 months.

Open-fermented with 10% whole bunches, 2 weeks on skins post-fermentation, matured for 8 months in large format used oak. One of a handful of Barossa Valley grenaches with the same weight and power of top flight McLaren Vale grenache. It has abundant red cherry, raspberry, blueberry and plum fruits allied with firm tannins, and no confection/Turkish delight nuances. Moreover, it will react positively to maturation.

"A smart, serious grenache. The colour is deep red-purple, and the bouquet spicy and tinged with ginger and eucalyptus. It's rich and full on the palate, deep and very appealing, with density and persistence, finishing with some heat from its 15 per cent alcohol.

If you're going to splash some grenache this summer this one is hard to beat. Made from prized 100-year-old vines this wine is described by Turkey Flat as their winemaker's 'obsession' and it shows. Like a big box of Christmas cherries, it's generous, bright, bursting with farm-fresh, red cherry goodness and has the kind of soft, juicy sweetness that will put a smile on your face.

The grenache vines here were planted over 100 years ago. Each year, they still provide us with wine grapes from which we drink. Barossa grenache to a tee. Sweet and ripe and yet earthen and spicy. Firm-ish with tannin. Raspberried, tarry, a touch of campfire, plenty of juice, some warmth. The way tannin surrounds the fruit and keeps it all controlled and neat adds a touch of class; it elevates it. It’s clearly very good.
