Large bottle 2017 turkey flat grenache

Grenache has its origins in Spain and is particularly well suited to the Barossa climate due to its ability to withstand extremes of heat, aridity and wind.

The fruit for this wine was predominantly sourced from 98 year old Grenache vines grown on the Turkey Flat Vineyard. These old vines produce fantastically concentrated fruit which translates into a style of Grenache for which Turkey Flat has become famous.

These vines are traditionally spur pruned, in the goblet style of Southern France and yields are kept low (around 2 tonnes/acre or approximately 32 hectolitres/hectare) producing wines of exceptional quality.

To retain the perfect balance of fruit, tannin, herbaceousness & spice, critical attention is paid to the ripeness levels of fruit prior to hand-picking. A carefully chosen ratio of new & old French oak with the right toast bring this style, our winemaker's obsession, to life.

Enjoy with: Look to Grenache's origins - Spain, Italy & Southern France for food pairing inspiration; tapas, lamb, tomato-rich dishes, food to be eaten in the sun, the wine cooled just slightly on that hot summer's day. This darker style also pairs exceptionally well with steak, particularly when aged.

2012 Vintage Tasting notes

Much of the fruit that creates this wine is sourced from ancient Grenache planted on our Bethany property over a century ago. These gnarly old vines produce beautifully concentrated fruit which we craft into our unique and renowned style of Grenache.

The 2012 vintage conditions were ideal in the Barossa Valley. High sub-soil moisture levels combined with a long mild summer allowed the Grenache to ripen evenly. The resultant wine is one of balance, clarity and is exceptionally varietal.

Initial fermentation followed with 50% of the stems added back to the crushed fruit. Maturation took place in a combination of neutral oak Foudre and 20% new Burgundian barrels.

This wine is vivid in colour with prominent aromatics of raspberries and delicate lavender. A spicy, fennel tinged mid palate is supported by tactful oak integration. Primary spicy fruit flavours are rapidly followed by crisp and deliberate tannins that find true harmony in context with food.

Reviews and Awards

2012 Grenache - 'great drive & focus'

'A deep, dark expression of Barossa grenache that offers up plenty of brambly forest berries amid some spicey, licorice and gently tarry notes. The palate has sturdy tannin depth, great drive and focus. Really ripe and even with great length and raspberry essence to close. Drink in 2018.

2012 Grenache - a ripe, juicy combination

The 2012 vintage seems to have coaxed the best possible fruit from Christie Schulz's grenache vines, mostly more than 100 years old. The aroma mixes varietal musk and cherry flavours with spice. But it's on the palate the true sweetness and richness of the fruit shows up in syrup-like concentration. The potent fruit flavours, however, come with savouriness, spice and soft but abundant tannin. The ripe, juicy combination adds up to a unique Barossa wine, with some cellaring potential.
