Large bottle 2017 turkey flat grenache

Grenache has its origins in Spain and is particularly well suited to the Barossa climate due to its ability to withstand extremes of heat, aridity and wind.

The fruit for this wine was predominantly sourced from 98 year old Grenache vines grown on the Turkey Flat Vineyard. These old vines produce fantastically concentrated fruit which translates into a style of Grenache for which Turkey Flat has become famous.

These vines are traditionally spur pruned, in the goblet style of Southern France and yields are kept low (around 2 tonnes/acre or approximately 32 hectolitres/hectare) producing wines of exceptional quality.

To retain the perfect balance of fruit, tannin, herbaceousness & spice, critical attention is paid to the ripeness levels of fruit prior to hand-picking. A carefully chosen ratio of new & old French oak with the right toast bring this style, our winemaker's obsession, to life.

Enjoy with: Look to Grenache's origins - Spain, Italy & Southern France for food pairing inspiration; tapas, lamb, tomato-rich dishes, food to be eaten in the sun, the wine cooled just slightly on that hot summer's day. This darker style also pairs exceptionally well with steak, particularly when aged.

2010 Vintage Tasting notes

The perfect weather conditions of warm days, cool nights and no rain during ripening and harvest of 2010, resulted in some of the best varietal expressions we have seen in Grenache in many years. Rich in colour and tannin structure, displaying primary fruit characters of fresh raspberry and plum.

A balanced and elegant wine with a palate of sweet spice and clove. More savoury characters of fennel and black pepper give way to a lingering fine tannin finish. This wine will age gracefully with careful cellaring of up to 10 years.

Reviews and Awards

Pick of the 2010's - Grenache

Turkey Flat's rich Barossa reds are invariably outstanding, but pick of the 2010s is this once humdrum variety. Enticing spicy oak and plum aromas show earthy development with long, silky tannins on the full palate Jeff Collerson - Daily Telegraph, Sydney, August 2012

James Halliday on the 2010 Grenache

Light but bright colour; made from the 90-year-old estate plantings, it is unmistakably varietal, but has more savoury tannins than most of its Barossa Valley compatriots. Letting these tannins loosen their grip would be a very good idea. Rating 93/100
