Grenache has its origins in Spain and is particularly well suited to the Barossa climate due to its ability to withstand extremes of heat, aridity and wind.
The fruit for this wine was predominantly sourced from 98 year old Grenache vines grown on the Turkey Flat Vineyard. These old vines produce fantastically concentrated fruit which translates into a style of Grenache for which Turkey Flat has become famous.
These vines are traditionally spur pruned, in the goblet style of Southern France and yields are kept low (around 2 tonnes/acre or approximately 32 hectolitres/hectare) producing wines of exceptional quality.
To retain the perfect balance of fruit, tannin, herbaceousness & spice, critical attention is paid to the ripeness levels of fruit prior to hand-picking. A carefully chosen ratio of new & old French oak with the right toast bring this style, our winemaker's obsession, to life.
Enjoy with: Look to Grenache's origins - Spain, Italy & Southern France for food pairing inspiration; tapas, lamb, tomato-rich dishes, food to be eaten in the sun, the wine cooled just slightly on that hot summer's day. This darker style also pairs exceptionally well with steak, particularly when aged.
This is the first release of the Turkey Flat Grenache. Grenache is one of the most widely planted grape varieties in the world. Grenache is well known in Europe where the vignerons of the Rhone Valley in France and the Rioja in Spain hold it in high regard.
The fruit for this vintage is grown on very old, low yielding bush vines, planted in gravelly soil. This wine has had a year’s maturation in oak which is the ingredient needed to produce a full bodied style such as this.
This wine was made at Rockford Winery using open fermenters and the basket press. We did not declare a vintage for this wine although it was all 1992 fruit.
The Turkey Flat Grenache is a food wine, ideally suited to full flavoured dishes of all kinds.
