The Butchers Block is a traditional Barossa blend made with grapes selected from the Turkey Flat vineyards, including some from the original old vine plantings. It is a blend of Shiraz, Grenache and Mourvédre (Mataro), with the proportions of each variety varying from vintage to vintage.

Like medals at a children's sporting event, when we blend a wine we like each parcel to have recognition; its own chance to feel proud of its contribution to the team. Here, each varietal is vinified & aged individually in French oak barrels before the final blending process. Shiraz adds the generous mouthfeel, Grenache the spice and cherry-like sweetness and Mourvèdre the backbone, savoury edge and fragrance. Balance is crucial, each varietal's contribution is evident yet nothing competes for your attention.

Enjoy with: Warm, comforting meals just like Mum makes - spaghetti bolognese, braises or lamb cutlets. Or funk it up a notch with braised rabbit or hare with tomato & olives.

2015 Vintage Tasting notes

A dry winter and growing season led to the earliest vintage on record. Though quick the vintage yielded robust flavours and colours.

A thrilling wine that leaps from the glass with instant rapport. Layers of spice, dark plum, cassis and berry fruit adorn the palate - pleasantly held by an oaky embrace. To be shared, to be enjoyed.

2015 Butchers Block Red in Matthew Jukes 100 Best Australian wines!

"Butchers Block used to be a forward-drinking SGM/Cotes-du-Rhone style wine with open fruit and minimal tannin. In the last few years it has clearly invested in a gym membership (note to self) and this has not resulted, thankfully, in a Muscle Mary physique, but in more tone and sinew that I expected. Today Butchers Block is ninja-fit with elevated aromatics and punchier tannins. There is a lot of wine here and I dearly hope that we will see it sold in many more outlets."

Max Allen on the 2015 Butchers Block Red

Given their track record of reliability and quality, Turkey Flat's wines offer good value across the board: their excellent varietal grenache and mataro (two of the Barossa's best) sit around $30, as does their superb fortified Pedro Ximènez. But the Butchers Block - a blend of shiraz, grenache and mataro - is particularly well priced, especially so as it's from the generously-flavoured 2015 vintage: lots of squishy black bramble fruit, held in check by lovely supple tannins.

2015 Butchers Block Red - outstanding value for money

Deep red/purple, bright colour, with a walnut, dry spice, dusty aroma. It's medium to full-bodied and softly textured, with good fleshiness and abundant supple tannins. There is density and richness here, with some licorice notes and abundant alcohol without hotness. A generously proportioned shiraz-based red. Delicious wine, and quite decadent. Outstanding value for money.

2015 Butchers Block Red - Dan Traucki's Wine of the Week


In this day of instant everything (news, information, reactions, etc), one of the few things that’s out of step with the world is wine. Most wines, certainly most reds, need quite some time after release before they are really ready to drink – unless you like monster reds. Yes, there are a few winemakers who hold their wines back for a few years so that they are readier for consumption when released, but even Grange is now released a year earlier than it used to be.

Therefore it is great to come across a wine that hits the ground running. No need to hide it away until it becomes more drinkable.

The TURKEY FLAT “BUTCHERS BLOCK” 2015 SHIRAZ GRENACHE MATARO (Barossa Valley) is ready to drink and rearing to go. No, it is not a thin, watery wine. It has a beautiful depth of purple colour, a lovely brambly, rich Barossan-nose, and a smooth, elegant, mid-weight body that makes the palate go YUM! YUM!

It is a gloriously well-balanced and structured wine that you can drink right now either on its own or with food – BUT wait, there’s more!! If like me you have a degree of patience, you can park it away in the cupboard or cellar for a while (12-24 months and 3-5 years respectively) and it will reward your patience by improving and rounding out to be a sublime wine.

With an RRP of just $20 for a truly great Barossa blend, you just can’t go wrong.

2015 Butchers Block Red - drinks like a charm

It’s right in the zone. It’s an attractive blend of red and black berried fruit flavours, teamed beautifully with anise, leather and those dried, almost rusty spice characters so common in Barossa reds. It’s balanced, it’s ripe, it’s warm but not excessively so. Or not distractingly so. In short, it drinks like a charm, and has plenty of regional character.
