The Butchers Block is a traditional Barossa blend made with grapes selected from the Turkey Flat vineyards, including some from the original old vine plantings. It is a blend of Shiraz, Grenache and Mourvédre (Mataro), with the proportions of each variety varying from vintage to vintage.

Like medals at a children's sporting event, when we blend a wine we like each parcel to have recognition; its own chance to feel proud of its contribution to the team. Here, each varietal is vinified & aged individually in French oak barrels before the final blending process. Shiraz adds the generous mouthfeel, Grenache the spice and cherry-like sweetness and Mourvèdre the backbone, savoury edge and fragrance. Balance is crucial, each varietal's contribution is evident yet nothing competes for your attention.

Enjoy with: Warm, comforting meals just like Mum makes - spaghetti bolognese, braises or lamb cutlets. Or funk it up a notch with braised rabbit or hare with tomato & olives.

2014 Vintage Tasting notes

The 2014 Butchers Block Red has an attractive colour & uplifting bouquet of dark plums, rose & sweet spice. The Shiraz brings a classic element of spice and blackcurrant to the palate followed by Grenache’s typical raspberry, cherry combination. Mataro is the spine of the blend, adding supportive tannin & fragrance.

James Halliday on the 2014 Butchers Block Red

48% shiraz, 28% grenache, 24% matador. Without question one of the best Barossa examples of this blend, synergy its hallmark as it brings its array of red berries, plum and blackberry/cherry flavours onto the stage, empathically leaving confection behind. Great value. Drink to 2025. Red star great value.

Mike Bennie on the 2014 Butchers Block Red

This blend of 50 per cent Shiraz, 41 per cent Grenache and nine per cent Mataro adds up to one very drinkable red wine. It has the warm red fruit and blackberry flavours of the Barossa with dark fruit and spice on the nose. There is a juicy freshness on the palate and the wine finishes with a light, dusty pucker of tannins. It's also a bargain and shows the potential of red wines from rich Barossa soils and warm weather.

2014 Butchers Block Red - it just works.

Such a good style of wine. Smoke, meat and (almost exaggerated) dry spice notes run headlong into raspberry, black cherry and anise. Life, lift, savouriness and guts. Aftertaste of warm saltbush. At the dinner table or by itself; it just works. No hesitation on this one.

2014 Butchers Block Red - cracking wine

There is brilliant value to be found in this bold but beautifully balanced Barossa blend. A melange of shiraz, grenache and mataro grapes, it is a perfect choice for anyone who likes their reds with a hint of machismo. This is forward and fun and can either be enjoyed in its playful youth or comfortably cellared for a decade. Great with steaks or braises, this is a wine that blossoms when matched with food.
