Large bottle 2016 butchers block red

The Butchers Block is a traditional Barossa blend made with grapes selected from the Turkey Flat vineyards, including some from the original old vine plantings. It is a blend of Shiraz, Grenache and Mourvédre (Mataro), with the proportions of each variety varying from vintage to vintage.

Like medals at a children's sporting event, when we blend a wine we like each parcel to have recognition; its own chance to feel proud of its contribution to the team. Here, each varietal is vinified & aged individually in French oak barrels before the final blending process. Shiraz adds the generous mouthfeel, Grenache the spice and cherry-like sweetness and Mourvèdre the backbone, savoury edge and fragrance. Balance is crucial, each varietal's contribution is evident yet nothing competes for your attention.

Enjoy with: Warm, comforting meals just like Mum makes - spaghetti bolognese, braises or lamb cutlets. Or funk it up a notch with braised rabbit or hare with tomato & olives.

2013 Vintage Tasting notes

A hot & dry summer combined with low winter rainfall and reduced yields have created wines of exceptional colour and tannin depth during vintage 2013 in the Barossa Valley.

The 2013 Butchers Block Red has an attractive colour & uplifting bouquet of dark plums, rose & sweet spice. The Shiraz brings a classic element of spice and blackcurrant to the palate followed by Grenache’s typical raspberry, cherry combination. Mataro is the spine of the blend, adding supportive tannin & fragrance.

2013 Butchers Block Red 'a bigger wine than many other GSM styles'

Bold shiraz, grenache and mature in a 48:28:24 proportional mix which comes on strong in a full-bodied manner, robust and generous with notes of licorice and earthiness as well as its expected vintage specific dark fruit profile. There's a fair bit of mouthfeel and texture here for a wine of this price range and it's a bigger wine than many other GSM styles. It will cellar well, too.

James Halliday on the 2013 Butchers Block Red

A 48/28/24% estate-grown blend of shiraz, grenache and mataro. It has the gravitas more often encountered in McLaren Vale than the Barossa Valley in its display of predominantly black fruits and absence of confection; it is only medium-bodied, but has immaculate fruit/tannin/oak balance and integration. As ever, over-delivers on price.

2013 Butchers Block Red 'very good value'

A savoury blend of shiraz, grenache and mature from the Barossa. No more than a middleweight with ample, if simple, ripe fruit flavours and gentle tannin. Very good value from a dependable producer.

2013 Butchers Block Red - 'fills the palate with youthful juicy berry flavors'

Blended of 48% Shiraz, 28% Grenache, 24% Mataro, the 2013 Butcher's Block has a medium garnet-purple color and fragrant notes of kirsch, raspberry coulis and blackberry tart with nuances of violets, lavender and eucalypt. Medium to full-bodied, it fills the palate with youthful juicy berry flavors with a good amount of freshness and chew to balance, finishing with good length.

2013 Butchers Block Red - 'Excellent value'

48% Shiraz, 28% Grenache, 24% Mataro. Nice packaging. New I suspect, but I’m long out of touch with the goings on at Turkey Flat.

Black fruits, sweet spices, new leather and earthy complexity, perhaps a mint and dried flower perfume. Medium bodied, but fleshy and smooth in the mouth, with very fine dense tannin, a mix of red and black fruit, all nicely spiced, then savoury finish of good length. Right in the slot. Excellent value.

2013 Butchers Block Red - 'What a cracking wine'

What a cracking wine this Barossa red blend is for those looking for an affordable buy that doesn’t lack quality. A blend of shiraz, grenache and mataro, three signature regional grape varieties, this just oozes drinkability with its forward fruit and restrained power. It comes from a label with plenty of history, too, with the Schulz family having owned the Turkey Flat property since 1865.
