Large bottle 2016 butchers block red

The Butchers Block is a traditional Barossa blend made with grapes selected from the Turkey Flat vineyards, including some from the original old vine plantings. It is a blend of Shiraz, Grenache and Mourvédre (Mataro), with the proportions of each variety varying from vintage to vintage.

Like medals at a children's sporting event, when we blend a wine we like each parcel to have recognition; its own chance to feel proud of its contribution to the team. Here, each varietal is vinified & aged individually in French oak barrels before the final blending process. Shiraz adds the generous mouthfeel, Grenache the spice and cherry-like sweetness and Mourvèdre the backbone, savoury edge and fragrance. Balance is crucial, each varietal's contribution is evident yet nothing competes for your attention.

Enjoy with: Warm, comforting meals just like Mum makes - spaghetti bolognese, braises or lamb cutlets. Or funk it up a notch with braised rabbit or hare with tomato & olives.

2011 Vintage Tasting notes

The 2011 growing season threw us atypical conditions for the ordinarily sun-drenched Barossa Valley. A cool and wet summer was instrumental in the approach to the winemaking, leading to a Butchers Block Red dominated by Shiraz from our more exposed sites.

In the glass, Butchers Block Red is a structured wine with Shiraz providing a significant backbone of lively fruit and tannin. Grenache adds white pepper to the palate and nose, whilst Mourvedre contributes further interest and vitality. The 2011 Butchers Block Red is an enticing wine best drunk within 5 years.

2011 Butchers Block Red - on form

The Butchers block refers to a vineyard on the property where Ernst Schultz used to run a thriving butchery business on the side and probably used to make the bush turkeys a little nervous. Thankfully for us growing grapes and making wine became the focus and Turkey flat remains a rich party of the Barossa’s history. Another rich part of the region is the blend of Grenache, Shiraz and Mourvedre and this is on form showing plum and rich spice, juicy fruit and a finely structured palate. It would pair brilliantly with barbecued pork dishes. 4.5/5

Turkey Flat's Butchers Block is a long time favourite wine of ours; always a leading exponent of the traditional Barossa blend of Shiraz, Grenache and Mourvédre (Mataro). With some of the Barossa's oldest vines at their disposal, this is consistently rated one of the region's best value red offerings.

The 2011 vintage of Turkey Flat Butchers Block red is a blend of 72% Shiraz, 19% Grenache and 8% Mourvèdre, with grapes selected from the Turkey Flat's Bethany, Stonewell and Koonunga vineyards.

2011 Butchers Block Red - Gourmet Traveller Top Drop of the month

Value Red Barossa grenache, shiraz, mataro blends can be big, sweet, burly wines, but the cool vintage conditions of 2011 resulted in a medium-bodied, spicier, more savoury drink now red. Great with your butcher's best sausages. Australian Gourmet Traveller 1st June 2013
