Large bottle 2016 butchers block red

The Butchers Block is a traditional Barossa blend made with grapes selected from the Turkey Flat vineyards, including some from the original old vine plantings. It is a blend of Shiraz, Grenache and Mourvédre (Mataro), with the proportions of each variety varying from vintage to vintage.

Like medals at a children's sporting event, when we blend a wine we like each parcel to have recognition; its own chance to feel proud of its contribution to the team. Here, each varietal is vinified & aged individually in French oak barrels before the final blending process. Shiraz adds the generous mouthfeel, Grenache the spice and cherry-like sweetness and Mourvèdre the backbone, savoury edge and fragrance. Balance is crucial, each varietal's contribution is evident yet nothing competes for your attention.

Enjoy with: Warm, comforting meals just like Mum makes - spaghetti bolognese, braises or lamb cutlets. Or funk it up a notch with braised rabbit or hare with tomato & olives.

2009 Vintage Tasting notes

Each varietal component of this wine was vinified separately in open fermenters and subsequently aged in both hogsheads and larger format French oak for approximately 18 months. The result is an intense warm, earthy full-bodied red with seamless oak integration.

The nose is floral with hints of five spice, dark plum, cherry and blackcurrant. The palate is generous, displaying juicy sweet lifted fruits with a firm palate structure. An elegant and restrained wine with a velvety finish.

"A good friend brought me back a bottle of Turkey Flat from a trip to Australia 15 years ago paying $50 a bottle—the quality’s still the same, you gotta’ love the price now. Underbrush, gamy notes, dark fruit and aromatic bitters on the nose, this dishes up a tangy, racy rendition of the popular GSM red blend. Mid weight, nicely textured and brimming with flavour, there’s good red cherry/berry fruit with lashings of ripe bramble berry for balance. 2009 Butchers Block Red - one of the best

WEST AUSTRALIAN - April 2011 Beautifully soft and lush blend of shiraz, grenache, and mourvedre. It's generous and supple with excellent balance of fruit and oak. This is one of the best of these I have tasted. Dark chocolate and dense lush flavours with a floral lift. Rating: 93/100

2009 Butchers Block Red - drained to the last drop

THE WINE FRONT - Campbell Mattinson, December 2010 I’m away with the family at the moment but I tucked a bottle of this Turkey Flat shiraz-grenache-mourvedre into the boot prior to leaving, and then opened it up on the first night away. Turned out to be just the ticket. It’s extremely pure; it’s like an advertisement for the fresh, luscious sweetness of Barossa red wine grapes. I love how young and fruity this wine is. It tastes of raspberries and spice, earth and fennel. It has modest but ripe tannin and positive warmth. The bottle was drained to the last drop; anything less would have been doing the wine a disservice. Rating: 92 Points
