Matthew Jukes on Turkey Flat... a review

Blog full matthew jukes something exciting is happening at tf

I visited Turkey Flat in October and tasted and toured with Christie and Alex Schulz and winemaker Mark Bulman. It was an eye-opening experience. 2016 Turkey Flat Barossa Valley White - I know this wine well, but it was nice to taste it again. Made from 38% Marsanne, 33% Roussanne and 29% Viognier it shows a further finessing of this tri-varietal marriage and it is even a step up on the ravishing 2015 given it is a little more tense and vital. Crunchy and clean and not too scented this is a nicely polished wine and it's a bargain price to boot. 17.5/20 2017 Turkey Flat Rosé - TF has continued its quest to raise the game on this Grenache Rosé and there must be a super-cuvée on the horizon given the texture and vibrancy shown in this young wine. Fine and succulent this is a failsafe wine with Euro-dimensions coupled with TF-flair. 17.5/20

2016 Butchers Block Red -This is peak example of this blend

Turkey Flat is in fine form. This edition of the Butchers Block red blend is shiraz (49%), grenache (38%) and mataro (13%) Some of the shiraz comes from the original 1865 plantings. This is a peak example of this blend. It’s ripe, finely tuned, characterful and just plain smash able. It’s leathery, black cherried, comes laced with sweet spice, woodsmoke and mineral, and has enough brightness/red berried input to make it feel vigorous in a compelling way. Tannin management here – presented in ultra-fine form – is top level. It’s $20 extremely well spent. Rated : 93 Points

2016 Butchers Block Shiraz - just so damned delicious.

Barossa Shiraz, the new face of. 15% whole bunches. Served fresh. No new oak. The character of this. It’s meaty and spicy with an attractive core of plum-like fruit and flashes of gun smoke, red cherry, balsa wood and dry/aromatic herbs. It’s just so damned delicious, just so damned drinkable. Highly recommend. Rated : 92 Points

2016 Turkey Flat Grenache - it's a pearler

Turkey Flat Grenache. Grown mostly on vines planted over 100 years ago. It’s a pearler. Light on its feet but powerful. Tannic but in a velvety way. Ripe but not too sweet. It tastes of black cherry and raspberry, earth, florals, and sweet spice, almost into anise, but it’s the wine’s insistence, the way it curls through the palate, and the gravity of the fruit itself that really elevates it. Benchmark Barossa grenache, and no overt sign of oak. Rated : 95 Points
